“This happiness consisted of nothing else but the harmony of the few things around me with my own existence, a feeling of contentment and well-being that needed no changes and no intensification.” ~ Herman Hesse

To be sure, many of us miss the opportunities for a happy life because we think that it is a perfect state attained. That there are material acquisitions, positions of status, or other rails to be jumped before we can consider ourselves happy. We sometimes see what another has and envy them knowing that we would be happy if only we had thus and so.

But the truth is we see evidence all the time of those with wealth or fame or beauty or power who are not happy. The spell has still not been broken and they surge ever forward for more wealth, more fame, more beauty and more power, only to find again the emptiness. We can only ever know happiness from within and it is the font of life that wells up in the heart and embraces life as it is and then moves ever forward to experience greater love and happiness. Wealth and fame and beauty and power may indeed emerge in your life, but your contentment will emanate from love and you will know harmony in your own existence.
