When I share a smile or a kind word with someone I love or even a stranger,
I feel my heart open and my day brighten.

I am rarely disappointed when I catch the eye of someone passing on the street and smile. A face, sour or cross with all manner of worries and thoughts, transforms and, almost in spite of themselves, they are beaming with a smile in return. From our first moments as an infant, a smile reassures us that we are seen and loved. How small a gesture is a smile to impart such an enormous message. Too often we wait for the other to be nice, to make the first move, even in our family. When we do, we deprive ourselves of heart lifting delight and we miss the chance to alter the course of a day for someone else. Random acts of kindness and happiness can be deliciously contagious.

With love,
